Learning About Bees
Learning about bees is not an easy task. You must learn about the varieties of bees, like Italian, Russian, African bees and others. You musts learn and understand what makes the bees sick or weak. How do you kill a bug on a bug? You must learn to keeping the bees safe from Varroa, a small hive beetle, and wax Moths. How do you raise bees without pesticides? It is continual, ongoing learning. If you ask ten beekeepers, you will get 12 answers, and none are incorrect!
Honey Bee Hive Inspection.
We have over 90 hives located at the Moorhead Blueberry Farm. So if you see any bees when you visit the blueberry fields, now you know who takes care of them!
Local Hives
We now have more than 90 hives at Moorhead’s Blueberry Farm in South Montgomery County.
Honey super is overflowing, and the hive will soon need to be split.

Swarming
A strong hive can be divided into two colonies. The bees in the new colony without a queen will make a new queen. The beekeeper can physically split the colony, bees will swarm on their own and split into two or more separate colonies.
The Honey House is certified by the State of Texas and by Montgomery county with a food manufacturing license.
Uncapping is cutting off a thin layer of beeswax from the top and bottom of the frame to expose the honey. This can be done by hand using a hot knife.
We also use an uncapping machine that allows us to just push/pull the frame through as the machine cuts into comes. This is much faster than using the heat gun. During harvest time we have to uncap well over 1,000 frames, so this machine makes us more efficient.
Our honey extractor uses centrifugal force to extract the honey from the honey comb without destroying the comb. We can fit 18 frames at a time.
Once the honey is extracted pumped to a storage tank to hold until the packing step.
We actively participate in education to save the threatened bee population and to inspire a new generation of beekeepers. Contact us for information.
